Set the oven temperature to 350°F (175°C).

Lightly grease a baking dish with butter or spray with cooking spray.

Core each apple, keeping the bottom intact, then cut slices downward about three-quarters through each apple.

Place the sliced apples upright in the greased baking dish.

In a small bowl, combine melted butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, chopped nuts, raisins or cranberries, and lemon juice.

Spoon the prepared mixture generously between the apple slices.

Pour a small amount of water into the bottom of the baking dish, then cover with aluminum foil.

Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.

Remove the foil and bake an additional 15 minutes until the apples are tender.

Allow to cool slightly before serving with optional ice cream or whipped cream.
